- Non-arcing. Does not conduct electricity, is safe to use in dry state, does not have to be in a paste form. Particularly
helpful when replacing metal flakes.
- Acid/Alkali Resistance, Highly chemical resistant, these colourants are suitable for inclusion in the most hostile carriers.
- Good Dispersibility. Does not dissolve in water, but easily dispersiable in water-borne systems.
- High Temperature Stability. Suitable for high heat applications since pearl pigment can withstand temperature in excess
of 800 ℃ without failure. Incombustible.
Natural (cultured) pearls structure consists of an alternating layer-like arrangement of calcium carbonate and proteins which lie one upon another around a core. ( pic 1 ).
The interplay of refraction, reflection and transmission of light at the individual layers products the familiar iridescent or interference colours. ( pic 2 )
Artificial pearl pigments possess the property of pearlescence as they are of a layer-construction and function towards light according to the above principles. When pearl pigments are orientated parallel to the surface of the substrate within a transparent medium, the incident light to each pigment platelet is regularly reflected and optimum pearl lustre effects are achieved. ( pic 3 ).
On the other hand when the degree of parallel orientation is not enough, light scattering occurs and as a result the pearl lustre is lost ( pic 4 ).
The color of the reflected light varies depending on the thickness of the layer. The incident light is reflected and refracted by the film ; part of the light passes through and a smaller part is reflected. ( pic 5 ).
Pearl pigment are inorganic and consist of mica platelets coated with metal oxides of high index of refraction, such as titanium dioxide and iron oxide. The boundaries between the mica platelets of low refractive index, the metal oxides (e.g. TiO2) with high refractive index and the surrounding medium of low refractive index, in which the pigments are parallel embeded, generate the optical iridescent colours ( pic 6 ).
By coating miniscule mica platelets with varying thicknesses of titanium dioxide, we obtain interference colours. Metallic colours can be produced by combining mica with other metal oxides, such as iron (III) oxide. Interesting gold shade results from the simultaneous combination of titanium dioxide and iron (III) coatings. ( pic 7 ).

Pearl Pigments are suitable for transparent or transluscent resins. Since Pearl Pigment is an internal optical phenomenon, high clarity resin (PVC, Polystyrene, Acrylics, etc.) give the most striking results. Transluscent resins (Polypropylene, Polyethylene, etc), though possessing some degree of milkiness, also yield attractive products.

- The smaller the pellet size is (below 2mm), the better the dispersibility. - The usage of Pearl pigments together with carbon black produces metallic or bronze colours. |
- In-line screw type (Auger) is recommended for dry blending. - Marble effect products by moulding. |

- The above formulation is for reference only and a formulation can be voluntarily modified according to processing conditions. |
- Please note that Pearl Lustre Pigments should be added at the final stage when using high speed mixers, e.g. Henschelmixer, Drais Mixer, Fluid mixer (in order to avoid unnecessary breakage of the pearl pigments platelets). |
Normal Pearl Pigments Concentration |
The normal concentration of Pearl Lustre Pigments incorporated into plastics is 0.5-1.5%, excluding special cases. The thicker the sheet thickness or moulded products are, so the concentration of the Pearl Lustre Pigments requirement will be lower. The thinner the product, the higher the pigment concentration needed. However, please note that too high a concentration of them does not increase the pearl lustre effect On the contrary it will cause a poor effect. |
Usage |
Cosmetic containers, food containers, wall and floor coverings, home appliances, toys, toiletries, films, sheets, profiles, etc. |
Pearl Pigments are available for printing inks as conventional pigments. There are various to choose from according to particle size range and should be selected according to the individual printing process. Pearlescent inks can be easily prepared, by the incorporation of Pearl Pigments into the ink medium.
Example
Remarks : Pre-mixture of Pearl Lustre Pigments with a small amount of binder of ink medium produces better dispersibility and printability |

Pearl Pigments possess good dispersibility and physical stability and can be used in paints. Pearlescent paints can be prepared by incorporating the correct amount of Pearl Pigments into a clear lacquer, this is the same for an enamel. Pearl Pigments are supplied in various grades and each produces a particular effect. A suitable grade should be selected according to the application. Pearl Pigments are suitable for electrostatic coating. In addition they have good acid and alkali resistance and are suitable for use water-borne paints. They are also resistant to sulphurous products.
Example
Remarks : Pre-mixture of Pearl Lustre Pigments with a small amount of binder of binder paint or wetting agent produces good dispersibility. |

Pearl Coating |
Pearlescent paints containing Pearl Pigments are employed for high grade finishes for automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles, boat and so on. Spray coating, electrostatic coating and dip coating are some of the typical coating techniques used for the application of pearlescent paints. |
Usages |
Automobiles, motorcycles, construction materials, roof tiles, furniture, household commodities, cosmetic containers, stationeries, sports equipment, etc. |
APPLICATION FOR SPECIAL EFFECTS
Application |
Pearl Pigments are unique colouring materials which give pearl lustre effects alone and/or in combination with conventional inorganic, organic or even with metallic pigments they enable one to take full advantage of the splendour of the colours of Nature seen in our surroundings. |
* Special Effects | |
Silver metallic effect |
The combination of the 100 series and carbon black (0.001-0.05%) produces silver metallic effects. |
Bronze effect |
- 300 series alone or with carbon black - 100 series with transparent yellow colourants - 100 series mixed with 300 series the aforementioned combinations create various bronze effects.
|
Silky pastel effects |
- the combination of 100 series and a little amount of an opaque colorant, such as; yellow, red, blue, ect., or a minimal amount of titanium dioxide. - by applying the 100 series onto a pastel coloredackgound |
Dark iridescent colour |
The combination of the 200 series with carbon black (0.001-0.05%) or by applying them to a black background produces dark iridescent colours.

IMPORTANT NOTES WHEN USING PEARL PIGMENTS
1. |
Transparent pigments and dyestuffs combined with Pearl Pigments offer a wide spectrum of effects. Opaque pigments diminish the pearl lustre effects. |
2. |
Over-grinding, over-milling or even over-processing can lead to the fracture of the plate-like flake structure of the pigments into smaller light scattering particles, producing a milky lesslustrous appearance in the end product. |
3. |
In printing inks and paints, low viscosity situations may cause a concentration change, leading to a colour change, due to the settlement of the pearl pigments. Good and continuous of the ink will prevent settling. |
4. |
Combination of 2-different interference pigments which are complimentary to one another should be avoided. |
5. |
In combination with dyestuffs, the light stability test should be established in advance to going into production. |
